Connotative Meanings

Connotative meanings are personal meanings or emotions that an individual associates with a certain idea because of past experiences.

For example, the word family may bring up different ideas or emotions within two separate individuals. While the word's definition never changes, it still does for the individual. Some consider their closest friends to be family, while for others family will only ever mean blood relatives.
