Communication Competency
Developed by Spitzberg and Cupach, communication competence is the ability to choose communicative behaviors that are appropriate for a given situation. Competence is explained by the component model which includes knowledge, skill, and motivation. Knowledge is understanding what is best for a given situation. Skill involves applying that understanding, and motivation is wanting to communicate in that behavior (Organizational Context, 2001).
